One year of Alteryx Snack!

Then vs. Now: How Alteryx (and You!) Evolved This Year

It has been one year since the first newsletter of Alteryx Snack was sent, to our only subscriber at the time… Since then, we have grown to our first 100 subscribers, we have sent out more than 35 newsletters, and Alteryx itself has changed. So, this article is dedicated to one year of learning together.
Snack pairing: Yogurt Parfait – classic at the base, but layered and endlessly customizable, just like your Alteryx journey!

🎉 A Year in the Life of Alteryx Snack

One year ago, we launched this newsletter with a simple idea: make Alteryx more accessible, one bite-sized lesson at a time. Along the way, we’ve shared dozens of articles, compared tools to Excel functions, and even paired each tool with its own unique snack.

As we approach our first anniversary, it’s time to reflect. A lot has changed in 12 months—not just in Alteryx itself, but in how we work, learn, and build with it. Whether you’re still prepping for the Core Certification or crafting macros in your sleep, we’ve all grown. Let’s take a look at how.

🔄 Then: Desktop-First, Static Workflows

One year ago, the Alteryx universe revolved around Designer Desktop. Most of us built workflows on our local machines, saved them as .yxmd files, and ran them manually. Sharing work with teammates meant exporting files, zipping up dependencies, and maybe even writing a documentation PDF (gasp!).

Workflows were powerful, but they were static. Collaboration was often limited, deployment was manual, and automations had to be pieced together with third-party schedulers or Server.

☁️ Now: Cloud Capabilities, Collaboration, and a Broader Ecosystem

Today, the game is shifting fast. With the rise of Alteryx Designer Cloud and the continued evolution of Alteryx Server and Analytics Cloud, the platform is entering a new chapter.

Let’s break it down:

Feature

Then

Now

Designer Usage

Desktop-only for most users

Growing adoption of Designer Cloud (browser-based!)

Collaboration

Email or shared drives

Cloud-based workspaces, shared pipelines

Deployment

Manual or with Server

Integrated automation via Designer Cloud or Server

Python/R Use

Optional add-ons, limited UI integration

Deeper language integration with visual anchors

Interface Tools

Used mostly for macros

Now critical for interactive apps and scalable deployment

User Experience

Tool-heavy UI

Cleaner, guided experiences in the cloud

🧠 Your Growth: From Tools to Thinking

Now let’s talk about you. Over the last year, we’ve seen users like you move beyond just dragging and dropping tools—you’ve started thinking in workflows. Instead of “What tool should I use?”, we hear more of:

  • “How do I structure this logic?”

  • “How can I make this reusable?”

  • “Can I turn this into a macro or analytic app?”

It’s a huge leap—from tactical usage to strategic thinking. If you're building macros, experimenting with RegEx, or exploring Designer Cloud, you’ve crossed a major milestone in the data journey.

🧪 Tool Evolution Highlights

Some tools have seen more spotlight in the past year than ever before. Here are three that reflect the shift:

1. Rank Tool (New!)

An excellent new addition, the Rank Tool gives users native ranking capabilities with multiple logic types—Ordinal, Dense, Fractional, and more.

🆕 Why it matters: Before, you had to manually build rankings with Multi-Row Formulas and sorting logic.

2. Python & R Tool Enhancements

Alteryx has expanded support for scripting—enabling cleaner integration with packages and better debugging tools.

🧪 Use case: Advanced statistical modeling, dynamic APIs, or extending functionality not natively supported.

3. Cloud Connectors

Working in the cloud? Tools like Input Data (Connector) and Output Data (Connector) are now optimized for pulling from and writing to Google Drive, Snowflake, Salesforce, and more.

☁️ Pro tip: Use these to future-proof your workflows from local file dependency headaches.

🔍 Then vs. Now: How Workflows Feel

A simple “before and after”:

THEN:

  • “I’m trying to clean this CSV I just downloaded.”

  • “I need help figuring out how this Join is working.”

  • “Why does this formula tool keep erroring out?”

NOW:

  • “I’ve built a macro to automate this cleanup every week.”

  • “I’m creating an interface so others can input different files.”

  • “I use Multi-Row and Multi-Field logic to reduce edge case errors.”

If you relate to any of the “now” phrases—congrats! You’re not just using Alteryx—you’re designing with it.

🚧 Still in Progress: The Challenges We Face

It’s not all sunshine and snacks. Many users have expressed concern over:

  • Performance in larger workflows (especially with cloud transitions)

  • Slow load times in the Designer Cloud UI

  • Confusion around licensing and support tiers

  • Python tool crashing or inconsistent behavior

These are important conversations, and we’re committed to tracking how Alteryx evolves in response.

🌟 Looking Ahead

As we wrap up this year, here’s what we’re excited about:

  • Greater support for version control and Git integration

  • Expansion of low-code ML tools and data science apps

  • Better governance tools and data cataloging features

  • Continued focus on Designer Cloud stability and parity with desktop

🎂 One Last Bite: Celebrate With a Yogurt Parfait

A yogurt parfait is the perfect way to represent your journey—simple at the start, but with every layer you’ve added (fruit, granola, honey, maybe some chocolate chips), it’s become more powerful, flexible, and delicious.

So here's to you, your data journey, and many more snacks to come.

Thanks for being here.
Let’s keep learning—one byte at a time. ✨

Happy snacking and analyzing!
